"I'm finally able to invest in my future" - Restart Scheme Feedback

The Restart Scheme in Manchester is a government initiative providing up to 12 months of enhanced support to help local residents find a job in their local area.

It is designed to break down any employment barriers that could be holding them back from finding work.

During the scheme, participants can access additional training and re-skilling opportunities, as well as a package of holistic support.

The team also helps all participants to apply for vacancies suitable to their requirements, as well as providing a wide range of further benefits, such as a modern learning environment fully equipped with job searching facilities.

One participant who recently received our support as part of the programme is David from Manchester.

David's story

David had been unemployed since 2021 and had been living in Manchester since 2020, actively searching for work in the city but without success.

He had been with his local job centre for approximately a year before being referred to our team at the Restart Scheme.

Upon joining Restart, he was struggling with severe confidence issues, compounded by anxiety and depression, which posed significant barriers to finding employment

Confidence building & New job secured

Through regular meetings and a referral to Better Health Generation, David was able to work on his confidence, which contributed to alleviating his mental health challenges.

Restart also made him aware of various opportunities, leading to several interview opportunities, one of which resulted in a successful application to work at a local restaurant franchise.

The support provided by Restart was invaluable in building David’s confidence and enhancing his skills. The burdens of unemployment were lifted, allowing him to focus on future goals.

Looking ahead

David is now considering progressing within the restaurant to potentially become a manager. He is also exploring the possibility of becoming self-employed, utilising his degree – an option that he had not previously considered to be achievable before joining the Restart Scheme.

Starting a job has allowed me to be financially independent and I am finally able to invest in my future. Before I joined Restart, I wasn’t in a position to even think about going on holiday, but I am now able to start making plans.
