As part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, our Works4U team in the North East is able to deliver employability support for local residents.

In partnership with the North East Combined Authority, our programme focuses on supporting economically inactive residents of the area to improve and enhance their confidence and skills, with a view to progressing them towards the labour market.

Each participant on our programme is allocated their own Key Support Mentor in order to guide, coach and enable them to make positive life choices, as well as upskill themselves with the knowledge that we will continue to support them long after the programme has finished.

One participant who recently received our support as part of the programme is Kasim from Newcastle.

Kasim's story

As an international student, Kasim needed to find a part time job to help fund his cost of living while living and studying in Newcastle. He attended a local jobs fair to seek some help with this, which is where he met our team.

We caught up with Kasim after completing our programme, to find out more about his experience and the new role we helped him to find as a result.

Kasim began his feedback by explaining what he most enjoyed about the Works4U programme, and the level of support he received from our team.

What I enjoyed most about the programme was the incredible support and encouragement I received. The in-person meetings and phone calls kept me focused and motivated even when things felt overwhelming.

My relationship with Jimmy, Kirstie and Unica was always spot on. They genuinely cared and went above and beyond to help me succeed, most especially Jimmy.

Their guidance made a real difference in my journey and I wouldn’t have secured my job without them. I 100% recommend this programme to anyone serious about finding the right opportunity. If you need help, this is the team you want by your side!

Help from the team

Kasim also detailed how the team supported him with his overall employability, making significant improvements to his CV and tailoring this to his desired job roles.

My Key Support Worker, Jimmy, was incredibly patient with me. He chose his words carefully and related to me in a way that made everything feel easier.

We laughed a lot which helped relieve stress and he supported me with professionalism, paying close attention to every step of my journey until the very end. He is truly a face of hope.

Kirstie was also excellent, she played a big role in upgrading my CV and we shared some great moments even cracking jokes along the way. Their support made a huge difference and I’m truly grateful.

Consistency and determination

Thanks to the support of our team, Kasim successfully landed himself a new job role to support his studies, working at Newcastle United Football Club as a turnstile operator on matchdays. He concluded his feedback about his experience with a poignant message about determination, resilience and the importance of staying optimistic.

The main thing I learned from the Works4U programme is that we all have hidden skills and talents that sometimes need to be identified either by ourselves, or with the help of others. The support I received helped me recognise my strengths and build confidence in my abilities.

I also learned that consistency and determination pays off. Staying optimistic and surrounding myself with people who genuinely care made a huge difference. The experience not only helped me secure a job, but also gave me a new perspective on resilience and self-belief.
