Our employment support programme in the West Midlands, Works4U, is designed to provide opportunities for local residents to upskill, overcome personal challenges, move into work and gain qualifications.

The programme provides wrap-around support to help local unemployed residents find the right opportunity for them, while breaking down any barriers that could be holding them back from finding work.

One learner who recently completed the programme is Matt from Birmingham.

Matt's story

Matt arrived on our Works4U programme lacking confidence in himself and was hesitant about his chances of returning to full-time employment.

He was keen to find the support he needed and through our programme of employment support, he managed to regain his confidence.

Matt told us about how the support he received allowed him to discover new skills and rediscover the confidence in himself that he was lacking.

When I first joined the programme, my confidence was very low. However, through a series of structured lessons and 1-1 support, I was able to not only regain my confidence, but also learn new skills to prepare me on my journey to return to employment.

Welcomed and supported

Matt also described how he felt welcomed from the get-go by our Works4U team, and discovered the value that he could offer any would-be employers during any interviews.

I enjoyed the lessons and interaction with the other learners and staff. But most importantly, I enjoyed being made to feel welcomed, important and that I have real value to offer potential employers and society.

My tutor (Jonathan) and my learning support advisor (Debbie) not only supported me in the classroom, but also provided me with additional support to help me manage and resolve the barriers that were preventing me from moving forward.

Employment gained

Not only did Matt successfully complete our Works4U programme, but he also received a job offer of a full-time role working within telemarketing after a successful interview process.

He told us more about his new role, and how happy he is to be working for his new employer.

I started my new telemarketing role in September. Over the course of the programme, I felt my confidence increase thanks to the support I received from the team in Birmingham. I felt more prepared for interviews and started to believe more in myself and my abilities.

Congratulations again Matt, and the very best of luck in your new job role!
