Our pre-employment training courses are designed to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of what to expect when working in various industries such as Construction, Hospitality, Contact Centres, Express Logistics, among others.

These courses help prepare our learners and provide them with industry accredited qualifications as they prepare to return to full-time employment in their chosen sector.

The delivery of these programmes wouldn’t be possible without our highly-skilled tutors, who go above and beyond to make sure their lessons are delivered efficiently and at the highest level, so that our learners receive the maximum possible benefit from enrolling with us.

One of these tutors is Mark Carter – who recently celebrated this third “outstanding” delivery observation for his classroom lessons.

In this short blog, we catch up with Mark to discuss more about his role, as well as find out a little more about his hobbies and interests outside of the classroom.

Why did you want to become a Tutor?

Well I was a Tank Commander in the British Army for 22 years, where I used to train new recruits as part of my role.

When I came to the end of my time in the military, I realised that I had a lot of transferable skills and really enjoyed the training aspect of my time in the Army and wanted to pursue a career in this.

Which courses do you currently teach?

I’m actually one of a few tutors that can deliver all of our pre-employment training courses.

I’m mainly a classroom-based teacher, so it’s rare for me to deliver online. The main courses I deliver are in Construction, Introduction to Facilities and Express Logistics.

I really do enjoy teaching each of the courses I deliver and being based in a classroom with my learners.

What's your favourite thing about being a Tutor?

It’s got to be my learners, 100%. I love what I do anyway, but my learners really do make this job enjoyable. Building that rapport with a group of learners is great and I like to see where they've progressed to once they’ve completed their training with us.

Whether that's into full-time employment, or further training opportunities, I genuinely enjoy seeing people moving into better situations.

Occasionally I’ll get an email from a learner too, thanking me for helping them, and that for me is the reward for the hard work we put in as tutors.

Is there anything particularly challenging about being a Tutor?

Sometimes, you can get a group of learners that aren’t particularly engaged with the course content, but for me, this comes down to classroom management.

For the most part, my learners are there to better their chances of finding full-time employment and I genuinely enjoy working with them and seeing them move into fulfilling careers.

What do you like to do when you're not teaching?

Well I tend to work away from home a lot, so spending time with my family is always important to me.

But I also enjoy my motorcycle and going on tours across the country, as well as making things out of reclaimed wood in my garage at home for family and friends. I find that very relaxing and it’s a good hobby to help me unwind after a busy week.

And finally, if you were stuck on a desert island and could only bring one person, one meal and one album/film, what would you choose?

The person is easy, as that would be my wife. Although, we’ve been married 37 years and have only been to the cinema twice! So I’m not the biggest movie fan.

I’m much more into my music, so I’d bring the album “The Song Remains The Same” by Led Zeppelin, and the meal is definitely fish and chips with mushy peas!
