As part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, our Works4U team in the North East is able to deliver employability support for local residents.

In partnership with the North East Combined Authority, our programme focuses on supporting economically inactive residents of the area to improve and enhance their confidence and skills, with a view to progressing them towards the labour market.

Each participant on our programme is allocated their own Key Support Mentor in order to guide, coach and enable them to make positive life choices, as well as upskill themselves with the knowledge that we will continue to support them long after the programme has finished.

One participant who recently received our support as part of the programme is Dorren from Newcastle.

Dorren's story

Dorren arrived on our Works4U support programme in the North East as someone who was economically inactive and struggling to access employment. This was due to a lack of confidence and experience when it came to applying for jobs, as well as having a young family at home to look after.

She had a desire to pursue opportunities working with midwifery and nursing, but didn’t know where to start. With the help of our team and her Key Support Mentor, we were able to put a plan in place to help Dorren get started.

Dorren told us about the support she received and how it helped her work towards pursuing her career aspirations.

I have been supported in various ways that have significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. I was provided with a laptop, which I use for my English test preparation, and I received assistance with writing a CV.

Additionally, I attended information sessions on volunteer matters, which opened up new opportunities for me. I was also given financial support to enrol on an OET (Occupational English Test) preparation course, and I have been guided toward part-time job opportunities that I can do alongside preparing for my registration with the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council). These roles can allow me to balance work and family life, giving me more time with my children.

Key support received

Dorren also mentioned the level of support she received from her Key Support Mentor, and how she was introduced to suitable career opportunities that she could pursue.

My key support mentor has been instrumental in my journey. She provided one-to-one meetings where I received personalised guidance on writing a professional CV. She has also connected me with information sessions on volunteerism and job opportunities, including part-time roles that I can take on while preparing for my registration with the NMC.

She has supported and allowed me make decisions on what I want for my career. Additionally, she has supported me with practical tools, such as helping me acquire a laptop and offering financial assistance for my OET preparation course. Her holistic support extended even to my family, with thoughtful gestures like gift cards. This comprehensive guidance has been invaluable in helping me gain confidence and move closer to achieving my goals.

Practical skills gained

Dorren concluded her feedback by highlighting the practical skills she gained during her time on the Works4U programme, and how she plans on using these t pursue her career of choice in midwifery.

The guidance and support I received, especially through one-to-one meetings with my mentor, gave me clarity on my career goals and how to achieve them. Learning practical skills like CV writing, exploring part-time job opportunities, and preparing for my OET course has equipped me with the tools and knowledge I need to move forward.

The experience has significantly boosted my confidence in pursuing my professional aspirations while balancing family life.

We wish Dorren all the very best for the future and will continue to support her on her journey.
