As part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, our Works4U team in the North East is able to deliver employability support for local residents.

In partnership with the North East Combined Authority, our programme focuses on supporting economically inactive residents of the area to improve and enhance their confidence and skills, with a view to progressing them towards the labour market.

Each participant on our programme is allocated their own Key Support Mentor in order to guide, coach and enable them to make positive life choices, as well as upskill themselves with the knowledge that we will continue to support them long after the programme has finished.

One participant who recently received our support as part of the programme is Qurrat from Newcastle.

Qurrat's story

Qurrat arrived on our Works4U support programme in the North East as someone who was economically inactive and struggling to access employment. She had been working previously, but needed a change of career direction and wasn’t sure where to start.

She recalls how apprehensive she was when first arriving to the meet the team and described the help she needed.

When I went to the office for the first time, I was very unsure of my current status and what kind of jobs I could apply for, how to make a perfect CV and how to prepare myself for the interview. But the Key Support Worker there (John) helped me a lot.

"Like talking to a friend"

Qurrat reflected warmly on the relationship she developed with her Key Support Worker and how he helped to motivate her in her search for a new career.

I enjoyed the friendly environment and motivating behaviour of John. And of course the coffee! He really motivated me and our long conversations together were amazing, it was like talking to a friend who just wants the best for you.

I learned to let go my doubts and be a bit braver to face the reality that it's not easy to change careers from what I was doing for the last 30 years.

I now feel more confident in myself because John showed me a lot of other options available to me and how I can be perfectly eligible to do them. He tried to look for me ,discuss with me, and also helped me to apply. He somehow succeeded to pull me out of my comfort zone and face reality.

We wish Qurrat all the very best for the future and will continue to support her in her search for a new role.
