The Working Well: Support to Succeed programme was introduced to help reduce inequality and social isolation in various neighbourhoods across Greater Manchester.

The programme aims to help those who are economically inactive by providing free wellbeing, confidence and skills support, as well as providing access to opportunities to help them become more active residents, with the confidence and aspirations to achieve their goals.

It is a completely voluntary programme of support, with a specific focus on participants aged over 50, who may be experiencing age-related challenges and other concerns about returning to work.

One participant who recently completed the programme and entered full-time employment is Paul from Bury.

Paul's Story

Paul arrived onto the Working Well: Support to Succeed programme facing numerous personal challenges, including managing anxiety and overcoming structural barriers.

His journey to employment began with sessions facilitated by our team. During these sessions, we worked closely with Paul to identify the kind of work he would most enjoy and feel comfortable doing.

Together, we explored possible job opportunities and made sure he fully understood what each role entailed, leaving no room for surprises.

Recognising the obstacles Paul faced and to help ease his transition back to full-time employment, we also stepped in to provide practical support.

This included a personal support fund which covered four weeks of travel costs, ensuring he could focus on settling into his new role without financial stress, as well as a mobile phone, so that he could contact his new employers via email when he was away from home.

In addition to the practical support received, Paul was also given consistent emotional and anxiety support from his Key Support Worker throughout, as well as attending in-work support sessions.

By providing encouragement and strategies to manage his anxiety, we helped Paul build the confidence he needed to step into his new role with a positive mindset.

Speaking after Paul successfully re-entered full-time employment, our Senior Operations Manager for the Support to Succeed team in Greater Manchester, Joanne McLauchlin, said;

Paul’s success story is a testament to the power of personalised support and the dedication of the team working on the Support to Succeed programme. By addressing both his emotional and practical needs, we have enabled Paul to achieve a new level of independence and stability in his life.

We wish Paul all the best for the future and it has been a pleasure to support him to get where he needed to be.
