In today’s “new normal” of a more flexible and open way of working, working from home has taken centre stage – far fewer industries and businesses demand workers to be in the office 5 days a week. Covid-19 caused a lot of people to go fully-remote; some people have stayed that way, while others have adopted a more hybrid way of working (split between home and office).

There are plenty of benefits to this, mainly flexibility for people to work the hours more suited to them. On top of that, the flexibility to attend appointments, pop out to the shops, start cooking tea early, or do the school run.

This flexibility has particular benefits for lone or single parents. So we’re breaking down these benefits to see if they work for you…..

No commuting

For those working from home, the commute to work is fairly short, from bedroom to home office/living room/kitchen. Even if your previous office commute was only 10 minutes up the road, those previous minutes add up about two hours per week in travel time. It goes without saying that not having to spend time stuck in traffic is a great plus for lone parents as it means they have longer to organise their hectic households in the morning.

Do the school run

The flexibility that comes with working from home, often means that employers are more understanding of people taking time out o their day to complete life’s little errands. None are much more important than taking your children to school – even with a 9am start to your working day, the school run suddenly becomes much more achievable when office attendance is no longer required, especially if your school lets learners in earlier than 9am. The logistics alone become far easier, cutting down on favours from friends/family, or childcare costs.

Cost savings

It’s not just time that you save by working from home. At the very least, you’ll save public transport / petrol costs by not commuting to an office. On top of that, it becomes more feasible to prepare your own breakfasts and lunches (avoiding the temptation of fast food or the “snack van”). You might also be able to cut down on the more expensive office attire in favour of the more casual clothes. Finally, it might even be feasible to cut down on childcare costs if you can structure your working day to suit when your children are/aren’t at home.

More opportunities

With remote working comes the opportunity to work for companies that you may not have looked at before because of their location – all of a sudden, businesses hundreds of miles away (or even in a different country) are an option. This results in more opportunities for initial hiring and growth within your team.

Creature comforts

We’d be lying if we didn’t admit that one of the main benefits of remote work is the creature comports that your home gives you that can’t be found anywhere else. No more instant coffee, uncomfortable chair, small monitor, or annoying “one size fits all” background music. Want to make yourself a fancy espresso in the morning? Want to invest in a super-ergonomic chair? Want to use an ultra-wide HD monitor? Want to listen to techno, rap, or heavy metal music? Go for it! Also, who doesn’t prefer the comfort (and freedom) of their own bathroom…?

Spending time where it matters

We’ve touched on this already, but finally – working from home gives you more time (that thing you can’t buy!) to spend where it matters. Gone are the days of being out of the house 12 hours a day. Now, you’re able to spend time with your family – even an extra half hour a day adds up. Whether it’s the school run, a family breakfast, time savings on cooking tea to allow more time in the evening for family time – working from home opens doors to joint parents and lone parents alike – with time being the most scares commodity for those who have to carry all the responsibilities solo, working from home is on the best things you can do!
