Michelle (Shelley) Kershaw from North East Lincolnshire, is one of Pre-Employment Training tutors and teaches our various Contact Centre, Customer Service, Warehousing and Express Logistics training courses.

In this short blog, we find out a little more about Shelley and her experience in teaching, as well as finding out what advice she would share for those who are thinking of signing up to one of our pre-employment training courses.

Key facts:

"The enjoyment I get from teaching is second-to-none, and the reward I get from seeing a learner complete their course and go into full-time employment is so satisfying for me."

So Shelley, how long have you been teaching for?

I came into teaching quite late on in my life. It was always classroom-based before I joined B2W, but I now train multiple courses online.

What courses do you teach?

I mainly teach our various Contact Centre and Customer Service courses, as well as our Warehousing and Express Logistics training courses.

I’ve also recently completed my Carbon exams, so I can now start teaching our Carbon related courses, which I’m really looking forward to.

Is there a particular course or lesson you enjoy most?

That’s really tough!

I really, genuinely enjoy teaching all of my courses, as I get introduced to such a wide variety of learners from all walks of life.

Compared to when I used to do classroom-based teaching, I can now get double, treble or even quadruple the number of students in an online classroom.

The groups are always extremely diverse. I tend to find that I can have a group from all different ages, religions and backgrounds, which always makes for interesting group discussions on the course.

What advice would you give someone who's just signed up for one of the courses you teach?

Well firstly, our courses aren’t just something you can sit through to be able to then get into work. The skills and knowledge we teach are vital parts in helping you get upskilled in order to go on and secure full time employment.

I think I’d also just explain what to expect on the training course, the benefits of completing their training with us and the progression routes available to them. I think it’s important that our learners know exactly what to expect so that there’s no surprises.

I always start my first lesson with an introduction to the course, while explaining and talking them through what’s involved in the course and how we can support them once they’ve completed their training.

What do you enjoy most about tutoring?

The students!

The reward and enjoyment I get back from teaching really is second-to-none.

I might only be with a particular class for two weeks, but the rapport I develop with the students is great, and then the reward I get from seeing them complete the course and go into full-time employment is so satisfying for me.

I also always try and introduce some fun into the lessons I teach. I think it’s important to have fun while learning, as it helps to build that team spirit in the group and keeps my lessons lively and interesting.

I think it’s a real “art” to be able to make sure the course you’re teaching is made suitable for your learners, and that’s something I’m really proud of.
